BMW Fuel Injector Failure: Common Symptoms

Fuel injectors are one of the most important parts of your engine, and as their name suggests, they inject fuel into the cylinders during the combustion process.

These injectors have to be timed to the exact moment of the combustion cycle where they need to inject the fuel. Even the smallest fault in an injector can make some big issues.

This is why injector failure is such a big problem when it happens. Without the ability to properly inject fuel, the vehicle will experience some unsettling symptoms.

Unfortunately, BMW vehicles are fairly prone to this issue. While not exclusive to Bimmers by any means, they have a history of early injector failure and the accompanying symptoms.

What Are Injectors?

Fuel injectors act as the delivery system for fuel. Through communication with the car’s computer (ECU), they know exactly how much fuel to inject and when to do it. They point directly into the top part of the cylinder and the pathway for air to enter. They’re perfectly timed with the intake and exhaust valves to run for optimal power and efficiency.

Though small, injectors are obviously quite vital to the usability of the vehicle. They’re the difference between the engine running and not. A bad fuel injector will cause problems, and there’s not much that you can do to remedy that beyond just replacing it.

Symptoms of Bad Fuel Injectors in Your BMW

If your BMW is experiencing faulty injectors, there are some common symptoms that you may experience, including:

  • Difficulty starting
  • Stalling
  • Hiccuping or rough idle
  • Engine knock
  • Surging
  • Grey or brown smoke
  • Smell of emissions/gas
  • Check engine light

These symptoms can all be signs of possible long-term problems caused by fuel injector failure. A bad injector may cause you to be unable to pass emissions if you area requires it. The unhealthy ratio of air/fuel can also cause significant engine damage down the line if not replaced immediately.

I Might Have a Bad Injector! What do I do now?

If you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms or suspect injector failure for any other reason, it’s best to avoid driving the vehicle until you can get it to a professional as soon as possible.

A technician will inspect your injectors, and if they do turn out the be the issue, replace them with new ones.

While it might be pricey to have them replaced, it can save you thousands down the line avoiding the potential for catastrophic engine damage.

How Can I Prevent Injector Failure in the Future?

Unfortunately, injectors are a part that sees a lot of wear and tear just due to the nature of their purpose. All injectors will eventually fail, and there’s no surefire way to postpone that.

However, using high-quality fuel and changing your fuel filter regularly can extend the life of your injectors in many situations. This will keep contaminants out of your fuel system and prevent the injectors from clogging or failing as quickly.
